General Session: August 7-10, 2024
This course will provide evidence-based strategies to address frequently encountered medically unexplained conditions.  We will begin with a thorough discussion of the pathophysiological process of central sensitization; this will be followed by lectures focusing on specific medically unexplained conditions and symptoms.  Each topic will utilize didactic sessions, case vignettes, clinical pearls, and formal Q/A sessions.  

Optional Healthy Living Workshop: Thursday, August 8, 2024. 
This 3.75 credit workshop will discuss the benefits of a healthy lifestyle for both the patient and the healthcare professional. Topics will include a talk on the benefits of healthy lifestyle habits, followed by in-depth looks at nutrition, physical activity, coffee, tea, sugar and diet beverages, alcohol and other beverages. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of current controversies in nutrition. We will include practical tips on how to incorporate healthy habits into a busy lifestyle and how to communicate this to patients. We will focus on the general lifestyle recommendations and also discuss the benefits for patients with fibromyalgia.

Workshop Highlights- 

  • Palatable Prevention – Discuss the overall evidence between diet and health.
  • Liquid Health? – Discuss the health benefits and risks of coffee, tea, sugar sweetened, diet, and other beverages.
  • Nutrition Controversies – Discuss the scientific evidence on the health benefits and risks of certain controversial nutrition topics including gluten, nuts, genetically modified foods, and select dietary supplements.

Target Audience

This course is intended for general internists, internal medicine subspecialists, family medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other primary healthcare professionals who practice in or have a special interest in treating medically complex patients.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the pathophysiological process of central sensitization
  2. Highlight the relationship between central sensitization and various medically unexplained symptoms
  3. Integrate evidence-based diagnostic and treatment strategies for fibromyalgia
  4. Identify effective strategies for managing chronic gastrointestinal symptoms
  5. Define post-COVID syndrome
  6. Identify strategies for effective management of post-COVID syndrome
  7. Integrate evidence-based diagnostic and treatment strategies for chronic fatigue syndrome
