The Mayo Clinic International Symposium on Surgery of the Spastic Upper Limb is a comprehensive course designed for physiotherapists, rehabilitation specialists, and surgeons who treat adult and pediatric patients with a spastic upper limb. The course revolves around a multidisciplinary approach to the procedural and surgical management of the spastic upper extremity utilizing didactic lectures reviewing current concepts, stimulating debates on controversial surgical techniques, all-access live surgery demonstrations with a master surgeon, and engaging case presentations.

A precourse is offered on June 4, 2024 to provide a thorough review of advanced surgical anatomy and hands-on dissection to learn and refine surgical techniques for the spastic upper extremity.

This United States based offering is a continuation from the International Symposium on Surgery of the Spastic Upper Limb held in Paris, France in 2017 under the direction of Dr. Caroline Leclercq.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, residents, fellows, physician assistants, physical and occupational therapists interested in the procedural, surgical, and rehabilitative care of the spastic upper limb.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define the role of nonoperative management for the spastic upper limb.
  • Recognize the indications and principles of upper limb surgery for spasticity.
  • Apply muscle tendon lengthening procedures to reduce spasticity and correct upper limb deformities with soft tissue contractures.
  • Utilize peripheral nerve procedures to enhance function in the spastic upper limb.

The city is serviced by a modern international airport with multiple flights daily via American, Sun Country and Delta Airlines. Access to and from the airport is provided by taxi, shuttle service, and rental car. The airport is located approximately 10 miles from the Marriott Hotel Rochester Mayo Clinic Area and the Mayo Clinic campus.

Note to Travelers: several cities in the United States are named Rochester. When you make airline reservations and check your baggage, be sure that your destination is Rochester, Minnesota (RST) and that your baggage has been properly tagged.

Flying through the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport (MSP) is another option. The following shuttle services offer multiple trips daily. Travel time is approximately 75 minutes.

Physical Therapy
Cosponsored by the Program in Physical Therapy, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science/Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences. This course meets the criteria for 8.25 hours of credit per Minnesota Physical Therapy Rules 5601.2400, 5601.2500.

ABS
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn credit toward the CME requirements of the American Board of Surgery’s Continuous Certification program. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABS credit.
